Mathieu van der Poel has won the 106th Tour of Flanders.

The Dutch professional cyclist won the sprint in Oudenaarde on Sunday ahead of his compatriot Dylan van Baarle.

For van der Poel it was the second success at the Ronde, where unrestricted spectators were allowed along the route for the first time since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

Third place went to Frenchman Valentin Madous ahead of Slovenian Tadej Pogacar.

After 272.5 kilometers and 18 toxic climbs, German drivers missed a top position.

For a long time, the race was dominated by a breakaway group of nine, including Max Kanter from Cottbus.

When the first attacks of the favorites followed a good 55 kilometers from the finish, the escape was over after more than 200 kilometers.

In the final, Pogacar and van der Poel first pulled away from a leading group at Oude Kwaremont before Pogacar attacked again at Paterberg.

But van der Poel followed the Slovenian, Madous and van Baarle caught up and the decision was made in the sprint.
