Thanks to a lightning start, FC Augsburg has gained some air in the table basement of the Bundesliga.

Coach Markus Weinzierl's team convincingly defeated VfL Wolfsburg 3-0 (1-0) on Sunday and moved three points clear of the relegation rank.

After the third bankruptcy in a row in 13th place, the wolves remain in slight danger of relegation.

Iago with the third fastest goal of the Bundesliga season (1st minute), Florian Niederlechner (62nd) and the strong Mads Pedersen (69th) scored the goals for FCA, who jumped to 14th place and moved up to two points from Wolfsburg.

The Fuggerstadt team will have their next chance to score big points in the fight against relegation in the catch-up game against FSV Mainz 05 on Wednesday (6:30 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Bundesliga).

"We can take a huge step, pull Wolfsburg down again and come within striking distance," Weinzierl said before the game - and his team implemented this plan consistently from the start.

Pedersen passed the ball on to Iago with a heel, who took the lead with a fine flick after just 49 seconds.

The failure of the almost complete Augsburg offensive around Alfred Finnbogason, Michael Gregoritsch, Andre Hahn and Ruben Vargas was hardly noticeable.

With the lead behind them, FCA acted boldly in front of 23,143 spectators and kept pin-pricking.

The wolves, in which the only 25-year-old Vincent Heilmann stood on the sidelines instead of the head coach Florian Kohfeldt, who was still corona-positive, initially hardly found a structured build-up game.

Lukas Nmecha missed Wolfsburg's best chance in the first half, the international was denied by FCA keeper Rafal Gikiewicz (24').

The game flattened out as a result, the mistakes piled up on both sides.

VfL goalkeeper Pavao Pervan prevented the 0:2 shortly before the break with a low shot by Ricardo Pepi (45th).

The wolves came out of the dressing room with more vigor, without radiating any real goal threat.

At the other end, Daniel Caligiuri missed a great chance to make it 2-0 when he chased the ball over the goal after an Iago pass (56').

Only a little later, Niederlechner and Pedersen did better for euphoric Augsburgers.
