Jonas Jerebko flew from Stockholm to Moscow via Istanbul and landed on Russian soil on Wednesday morning, according to Expressen who spoke with press manager Nikolai Tsynkevich.

The Swedish basketball star has signed a short-term contract that applies for the season with the Russian big club.

Two matches in the regular season remain for CSKA Moscow and the playoffs and if everything goes as planned, Jerebko can make his debut on 10/4 in the away match against Kazakh Astana Almaty.

- The recruitment of Jonas is very important to us.

We have lost many players in that position under these circumstances, says CSKA Moscow's press manager Nikolai Tsynkevich.

- Semyon Antonov has done well, but otherwise we have only had juniors left in that position.

We have the league playoffs ahead of us and with Jonas we have a stronger team.

We really need a player like him.

"Hope people understand"

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, seven foreign players have chosen not to play for the club.

Tsynkevich says that the club has no problems with it but has supported the players to find a solution.

Jerebko was clubless for just over a year before signing for CSKA.

Since the news became known on Wednesday, the reactions have been strong and the Swedish Basketball Association has decided to suspend the star from the national team.

- It makes me sad to hear, says Tsynkevich.

- I just hope that ordinary people have an understanding of him and his situation, both as a professional athlete and as a person.

He had been away from basketball for over a year and then he got the chance to start playing again at a high level.

Jonas is a professional basketball player and we support him, just as we support all our players who remain.
