How much did Corona cost the “Bundesliga” in two seasons? .. A shocking amount!

The new president of the German Football League revealed on Friday a decrease in total revenue of more than one billion euros in two seasons disrupted by the Corona virus.

According to figures from the German Football Association, revenues decreased from 4.8 billion euros to 4.05 billion euros for the 2020-2021 season in the first and second divisions.

"Covid has already had a significant economic impact on the Bundesliga in the last two seasons," said the new chief executive of the League, Donata Hopfen.

She continued, "In total, the decline in revenue after the two seasons affected by the Corona virus in 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 exceeded one billion euros."

And German Bundesliga revenue decreased by more than 750 million euros, by about 16%, compared to the record for the 2018-2019 season.

According to the German Football Association’s economic report for 2022, match revenues, especially ticket sales, decreased by 95%, from 650 million euros in the previous season to 35.5 million euros.

Not all Bundesliga stadiums have resumed their full capacity, two years after the start of the pandemic.

Games behind closed doors also affected jobs in German stadiums, dropping from 52,786 in 2019-20 to 26,183 last season.

Despite the losses, the first and second division clubs spent 1.3 billion euros in taxes and fees in the 2020-2021 season, according to the association.
