• Previous Catalonia and Aragon negotiate a first agreement for the candidacy of the 2030 Winter Olympics

The regional tensions threaten the Barcelona-Pyrenees Olympic bid, seen as a bridging project after the political and social bankruptcy that the 'procés' meant.

Catalonia, Aragon and the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) had agreed on a distribution under the proportionality allowed by the technical criteria of the 2030 Winter Games competitions, but

Javier Lambán

, president of Aragon, now demands that it be reviewed under the threat of withdrawal.

The parties are summoned tomorrow at the COE by

Alejandro Blanco

to find an agreement, although Lambán announced that he would not attend.

If not, the project will be mortally wounded just over a month before the Evaluation Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) begins its visits.

Blanco's negotiations have been long with all the parties, especially in Catalonia, given the political sensitivity after the 'procés'.

However, he managed to get

Pere Aragonés

, who was initially reluctant, to accept him as the leader of the project.

Blanco also sought the support of the mayors of the Aran Valley.

The distribution of the competitions was the most complex part, since proportionality collided with some technical criteria, with Aragón very careful not to be left behind.

Lambán warned him repeatedly.

Finally, Catalonia, with a greater number of resorts, stayed with alpine skiing but ceded ice sports to Aragon.

Although skiing is the most prominent sport, Aragon has awarded 54 events in the initial project compared to 43 Catalonia, and six sports for five the second.

An agreement was reached under these terms, but, to Blanco's surprise, Lambán has decided to question it, something of extreme concern for the president of the COE, because in Lausanne no project prospers without institutional unity.

Catalonia has already warned that it will not admit any modification of the agreed design.

The starting point of the meeting is therefore complicated and does not invite optimism.

Political motivations are not unrelated to these tensions.

Jorge Azcón

, mayor of Zaragoza, from the PP, has insisted that the candidacy must be egalitarian, pressure to which Lambán, from the PSOE, has not been oblivious, at a time when the Government of

Pedro Sánchez

is accused of favoring Catalonia from sectors of the opposition.

The alternative that Aragón promotes a unitary candidacy is, today, unfeasible for the COE, which observes the deadlines with fear due to lack of consensus.

In a year, the IOC will make its decision.
