The English Premier League .. 5 substitutions from next season

As of next season, English Premier League clubs will be able to make five substitutions during matches, similar to other major leagues, after it was agreed to amend the system on Thursday.

English teams were allowed to make five substitutions in the final stages of the 2019-20 season due to the busy schedule imposed by the outbreak of the Corona virus.

But unlike the other major leagues and the three continental competitions, this rule was abandoned in the following season and a return to the three substitutions for each side due to concerns that additional substitutions give an advantage to the major clubs due to the abundance of high-level players in their ranks.

"From next season, clubs will be allowed to use five substitutions, to be made on three occasions during the match, with an additional opportunity (to substitute) between the two halves," the Premier League said Thursday in a statement.

And the German coach of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp, and his Spanish counterpart in Manchester City, Josep Guardiola, were among the most prominent critics of the decision not to allow five substitutions, like other major leagues.

Guardiola said last season, "All over the world there are five substitutions. Here we think that we are a special league with (allowing to substitute) three players. We do not protect the players," referring to the pressure experienced by the teams with the presence of three local competitions in addition to the continental participation, This causes players fatigue.

In turn, Klopp accused the chief executive of the Premier League, Richard Masters, of a "lack of leadership" on the matter, saying the adoption of the five substitutions was "not an advantage, but rather a necessity".
