England coach Gareth Southgate reacted with complete incomprehension when his own fans whistled at defender Harry Maguire.

“I thought the reception was a joke.

A total joke," Southgate fumed about the behavior of some fans before and during the friendly against Ivory Coast, which England won 3-0 on Tuesday night.

"I do not get it.

What he's done for us is phenomenal," said Southgate.

He has absolutely no understanding for the behavior.

"How that's supposed to help anyone, I don't get it," he said.

Ahead of the game, Maguire's difficult spell at Manchester United was a big topic in the English media.

When his name was read out in the line-up of the European Championship finalists, there were boos just like when he first touched the ball.

Maguire didn't play badly and was involved in creating the opening two goals.

Teammate Jack Grealish also made comments after the game.

"I think it's ridiculous," said the Manchester City pro.

"Harry was incredible for this country at the World Cup, at the European Championship, outstanding.

I think even tonight he was brilliant.

It wasn't nice to hear he was being booed and the whole team didn't like that."

Meanwhile, stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski can look forward to the tournament in Qatar.

The Portuguese defeated North Macedonia 2-0 (1-0) in Porto on Tuesday evening and qualified for the finals.

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski led Poland to a well-deserved 2-0 (0-0) win over Sweden in Chorzow.

Portugal qualified for a World Cup for the eighth time and Poland's ninth participation.

Meanwhile, because of Russia's war of aggression, Ukraine will not meet Scotland in the semi-finals until June, with the winners meeting Wales.

In addition to the German selection in Europe, Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Croatia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Serbia and Spain had also previously qualified.

Drama about Mané and Salah

Ghana, Morocco, Tunisia, Cameroon and Senegal, meanwhile, are the five African participants in Qatar.

All national teams prevailed in their continent's play-off second leg.

In the repeat of this year's Africa Cup of Nations final, Senegal won 3-1 against Egypt in a dramatic penalty shoot-out and are at the World Cup for the third time.

After 120 minutes it was 1-0 for the African champions in Dakar.

The team around Liverpool star Sadio Mané lost the first leg 1-0 to the Egyptians around his Premier League team-mate Mohamed Salah.

As in the Africa Cup of Nations final, Mané converted the decisive penalty.

Egypt's star striker Salah shot over the goal on penalties but was blocked by laser pointers, as shown on TV footage.

He was also thrown at as he left the field after the game.
