Obituary Max Mosley dies, the former FIA president who fell after a sex scandal
On May 24, it will be one year since the death of Max Mosley, president of the FIA (International Automobile Federation) for 16 years (1993-2009) that ended after a sexual scandal.
The Briton died at the age of 81, but now, after an investigation, it has been revealed that he was found dead at his home in Chelsea, west London, with a gunshot to the head.
After learning that he had terminal cancer, he decided to take his own life by shooting himself in the head.
According to the investigation, Mosley had been told that he had only a few weeks to live and that his bladder and bowel pain was incurable.
He would only subside with palliative care.
A day before the event, the former FIA president told his personal assistant,
Henry Alexander
, that he had made the decision to commit suicide, according to 'The Independent'.
A neighbor and his housekeeper called emergency services after finding a note on his bedroom door saying 'don't go in, call the police'.
A suicide note was also found on her nightstand, but it was barely legible due to the large amount of blood.
Among the few words officers could make out were: "I had no choice," the Westminster Coroner's Court explained.
Hockenheim 1968
Son of the fascist leader
Sir Oswald Mosley
and the aristocrat
Diana Mitford
, an illustrious friend of
Adolf Hitler
, Mosley's ties to the motor world intensified in the 1960s. In 1968 he made his Formula 2 debut at Hockenheim, the same Day of the tragic death of
Jim Clark
.
Only a year later, in collaboration with
Alan Rees
,
Graham Coaker
and
Robin Herd
, he would launch the March team, which between 1970 and 1976 added three victories in F1 and a second place in the world championship with
Ronnie Peterson
at the wheel (1971).
During that period he also collaborated as legal advisor to the F1 Constructors Association (FOCA) and was one of those responsible for the Concordia Agreements, which prevailed for decades.
His crusade for safety was based, among other measures, on the impact tests for single-seaters (
crash tests
), the ban on refueling and the introduction of HANS in helmets.
