All matches in the Belgian first and second divisions will begin this weekend with a minute of applause.

And the players will wear a mourning armband after the death of Miguel Van Damme on the night of Monday to Tuesday.

The Pro League, in charge of professional football in Belgium, published a press release on Tuesday to pay tribute to the goalkeeper of Cercle Bruges, who "had to give up the unequal fight he led for years against leukemia".

Ter nagedachtenis van onze vriend en ploegmaat Miguel Van Damme werd een rouwregister geopend, dat vanaf nu aan het Cercle secretariaat kan worden ondertekend.

Aged 28, Van Damme was diagnosed with his illness in June 2016, two years after the start of his professional career.

He was able to replay a few games during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 seasons, before relapsing.

Emotion in Belgium

"On behalf of all of Belgian professional football, the Pro League would like to express its greatest respect for Miguel's fight and its deepest condolences to his wife, daughter and loved ones," the statement said.
