League leaders SC Magdeburg suffered their second defeat of the season in the Handball Bundesliga in the top game against THW Kiel.

In front of 5558 spectators, the SCM lost 25:30 (15:17) in the Getec Arena.

The best Magdeburg thrower was Omar Ingi Magnusson with nine goals, while Sander Sagosen was the most successful for Kiel with nine goals as well.

Despite the defeat, SCM remains ten games before the end with a clear lead (44:4) ahead of Kiel (40:10) and Füchsen Berlin (37:9) and could thus, like only two clubs before him as a former East German club, one Win German championship.

In addition to SC Magdeburg, only Eisbären Berlin managed to do that in the men's field after reunification.

Kiel, on the other hand, celebrated an important victory in the fight for a place in the Champions League.

For THW it was the first victory in Magdeburg since April 8, 2015.

Magdeburg got off to a better start and threw out an early two-goal lead, which the hosts then defended for a long time.

The SCM fought with all means: Philipp Weber, somewhat over-motivated, clashed with his long-time national team colleague Patrick Wiencek in the early stages.

How much pressure was on Kiel could also be seen from the numerous discussions with the referees.

In the middle of the half, Kiel equalized for the first time (9:9/18th minute), but the SCM were hardly impressed and continued to play calmly - but had to accept the guest lead before the break (14:15/27th minute).

SCM also started better in the second half, benefiting from numerous time penalties against the guests and equalizing (19:19/35.).

Magdeburg was better defensively, but couldn't turn the game around because Kiel kept scoring through his individual players (22:24/49.) and Magdeburg's attackers despaired of the strong Kiel goalkeeper Niklas Landin, who was back after his appendectomy was back and saved two seven meters in the decisive phase of the game.

Magdeburg's coach Bennet Wiegert, son of East German handball legend Ingolf Wiegert, took a break.

"They dominate the duels because we don't pull properly," he criticized.

But his team had nothing more to add.

With a majority, the guests scored the first three-goal lead of the game (22:25/51.).

Despite all efforts, Magdeburg was unable to close this gap.

After the game, Wiegert struggled for words.

We imagined something different and didn't play our best game today.

Maybe it was a bit too emotional for us, too much cramp and not enough playfulness," he finally said on ARD.
