Jaroslava Mahutjich, like so many other Ukrainians, woke up to the noise created by explosions and gunfire on February 24.

But already the first day she managed to get away from her hometown Dnipro, and finally all the way to Serbian Belgrade, where she would today compete in the indoor WC high jump competition.

Mahutjich took Olympic bronze

And there it went well.

The Olympic bronze medalist from last autumn, who also has an outdoor WC silver on his merit list, managed - after passing 2.02 in the first attempt - to take his first WC gold at senior level.

For a long time, however, it looked like it would be silver.

This was when Eleanor Patterson, who topped the world best list of the year at 1.99 before the World Cup, managed 2.00 in the second attempt, at the same time as the Ukrainian tore her first two attempts.

Patterson put personal best

But the third attempt passed Mahutjich by a good margin, and then she took 2.02 in the first attempt.

Patterson, who had never been over two meters before today's competition, then tore first at 2.02, and then his two remaining attempts at 2.04.

Mahutjich tore all three attempts at 2.02, but ran immediately after the last jump to the stands to take the Ukrainian flag and ran a bit with it before she got hugs from her competitors.
