• FC Nantes has had its best season under the Kita era, president of the club since 2007.

  • But the joy of sports results does not erase everything for some supporters.

  • Since the victory against PSG and the qualification of the FCN in the final of the Coupe de France, other supporters have arrived at the stadium.

On March 3, it was almost 11:30 p.m. when the Beaujoire stadium was delighted.

Moses Simon has just scored the winning shot on goal for FC Nantes against AS Monaco in the semi-final of the Coupe de France.

The crowded stadium is on fire and thousands of supporters then invade the lawn.

Alongside the supporters present that evening, the players dance and celebrate the validation of their ticket for the Stade de France.

In the midst of this joy, a banner reads: “Support for those who work to give us back the FCN”, in reference to the project to take over the FCN led by Mickaël Landreau and the Nantes Collective.

The scene alone illustrates the state of mind of the Nantes supporters this season.

Because behind the emotion of the results, some do not forget the past difficulties: repeated changes of coach to the project of moving the training center.

The tension between the club's management and these supporters increased last season.

And some wounds remain open.

For them, a qualification in the final of the Coupe de France does not erase the tumultuous relations they have with the president of the club, Waldemar Kita.

“There is always anger towards the management.

On the evening of Nantes – Monaco, there were some who were at the bottom of the hole, thinking that they were going to take over Kita for ten years, ”says Thierry Tissot, president of Activ Nantes Supports.

Yellow fever vaccines

Divided between emotions of good sports results and disputes against the management, the followers of the FCN are as if divided.

If yellow fever has taken hold of the Nantes public, others are resisting.

Sometimes to the extreme, as for Jonathan: “The club's results no longer affect me.

Even qualifying for the Coupe de France final did not give me any emotions, ”explains the 36-year-old supporter, who has not been coming to the stadium for seven years.

“The results do not change my desire to go to the stadium.

I have been a subscriber in the Loire for three years and I go there to claim my love for my colors and to protest against the catastrophic management of the club.

Whether you are 5th or 19th, nothing will change,” says Corentin, 29.

Maxime, another FC Nantes supporter, adds: “This season will reduce the dislike of some supporters for the club, but not completely.

Impossible to forget a certain calamitous management”.

For some, the results do not forget everything.

“There is a schizophrenic side to all of this.

With supporters returning to the stadium on one side, and anger against the club's management, on the other side, ”analyzes Thierry Tissot.

“You have more than 20,000 spectators at the stadium against Montpellier on a Sunday afternoon (March 6).

There is enthusiasm.

I also see it with the number of members which increases among our supporters, since the qualification in the final of the Coupe de France ”.

“A question of generation”

By stringing together ten games in a row without defeat at home, Antoine Kombouaré's players have made some people want to return to La Beaujoire.

Especially since matches like those against Lens, PSG or Monaco have given fans great emotions.

For Maxence, 17, "returning to Beaujoire is becoming an event again" now.

Bilal, who has been going to the stadium “from time to time” since he was fifteen, has been coming back to it every time this year.

“I even took places for the Parc des Princes on a whim.

I feel a real enthusiasm in the Loire stand, especially against Paris and Monaco where we felt a passion in people's eyes.

»

At 20, Bilal and other young Canary fans have not known much with their favorite club.

This 2021-2021 season is the opposite of the previous one.

And they have every intention of living it to the fullest.

“It's a question of generation.

We have known nothing except a rise in Ligue 1, ”says Maxime Thomas, co-president of La Maison Jaune.

If he is not in tune with the club's current values, he will still be behind his team on May 7 at the Stade de France, against Nice.

“We must not forget that the president is passing through.

But the prize list, it will remain.

This Saturday evening, the FCN receives Lille.

In a Beaujoire which should accommodate at least 25,000 people.

Proof of this growing public enthusiasm for FC Nantes.

This match will be a new opportunity for the Nantes players to celebrate with their supporters, by chaining, why not, an eleventh match in a row without defeat at La Beaujoire.

An enchanted parenthesis that could last.

In any case, at least until May.
