The scandalous poster campaign by Hellas Verona Ultras before the Serie A game against Naples on Sunday afternoon has been unanimously condemned in Italian sport and politics.

The banner, which was hung outside Bentegodi Stadium, featured the flags of Russia and Ukraine, followed by the GPS coordinates of the Campania coastal metropolis.

The unmistakable message of the banner was the abstruse wish that the Russian air force, which was extremely active when Moscow invaded Ukraine, should bomb Naples as the next target.

The banner was drawn with the sign of the Hellas Ultras of the southern curve.

The club condemned the action just as clearly as the leadership of Serie A and politicians.

FC Hellas Verona is always committed to peace and understanding and condemns any message that incites hatred, violence and discrimination, the club said in a statement.

Serie A boss Luigi De Siervo said "only idiots could come up with ideas like this in tragic times like these".

Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio spoke of a "disgusting message".

Luca Zaia, President of the Veneto Region, to which Verona belongs, condemned the action as a "shameful act" that had nothing to do with the passion for football, nor with the receptiveness and spirit of solidarity of the citizens of Verona and the Veneto Region.

SSC Napoli won the game in Verona 2-1 thanks to two goals from Nigeria international striker Victor Osimhen.
