Tests The 'robotaxi' guides the way of the autonomous car
The future of the autonomous vehicle in the US wrote a chapter after federal authorities cleared the way for its production and use nationwide.
In a 155-page document published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, for its acronym in English), a green light is given to companies
that choose to make cars that do not include manual controls, steering wheels or pedals, and with automatic circulation systems.
The NHTSA makes it clear, however, that their "innovative designers"
will not exempt them from ensuring the same level of safety as other vehicles.
The aim of this ruling is to "resolve any ambiguities" that may arise around cars with an "automatic driving system" (ADS).

For Pete Buttigieg, US Secretary of Transportation, the goal is to "keep up the pace" with the development of systems for autonomous vehicles.
"This new rule is an important step in establishing strong safety standards
for ADS-equipped vehicles."
For his part, Steven Cliff, deputy administrator of the NHTSA, "as the driver changes from a person to a machine in vehicles equipped with ADAS,
the need to keep humans safe remains the same and must be integrated from the beginning" .
Google's Waymo is the most advanced company in this field
almost four million km
The decision comes in the midst of a technological race to impose technology on the market, with companies involved in the mission such as
Waymo -owned by Google-, Ford, Tesla or Aurora Innovation.
General Motors,
also in the thick of the robotaxi fight, petitioned the NHTSA in March for the production and use of a car without manual controls,
the Cruise Origin,
with plans to start manufacturing in 2023.
GM and Cruise are part of a list of companies, including Waymo, with permission to circulate their vehicles on a trial basis in various states of the country.
It is precisely the Google subsidiary that seems to have the most advantage, not only because of the program that already operates in Arizona but also because it has registered more kilometers traveled nationally in 2021:
3.6 million compared to the million in 2020.
Its deployment of vehicles , especially on the streets of Northern California, is already hard-hitting.
