British Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston and Culture Minister Nadine Doris will host a summit with their counterparts from Europe, the United States, Australia and Canada on Thursday to discuss further measures aimed at isolating Russia from global sporting events.

The Ministry of Culture, Media and Sport said - in a statement - that the UK government plans to create a coalition with the aim of putting pressure on Russia over its "invasion" of Ukraine.

The statement added that the alliance's objectives are to strip Russia and Belarus of the rights to host international sporting events, prevent their teams and athletes from competing, and crack down on investments related to Russia-related sports.

Belarus was a major staging area for the Russian offensive.

"We want to ensure that the Russian state cannot use sport to legitimize its system in any way, and we ask local sports bodies and international partners to spare no effort," the ministry said.

"Russia should not be allowed to compete in international sporting events in any way after (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's needless and appalling attack on Ukraine," she added.

Russia, with the support of Belarus, launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine last week.

And the losses of the war are increasingly dealing a heavy blow to civilians, with Ukrainian authorities estimating more than 2,000 civilians have died so far.

Several international sports bodies took action against Russia and Belarus after the International Olympic Committee recommended that federations ban athletes and officials from the two countries from participating in the competition.

Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Latvia, Italy, Finland, the Czech Republic and Norway will participate in the summit.
