The Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich will sell the top English football club FC Chelsea.

The 55-year-old confirmed this on Wednesday evening in an official statement from the Champions League winner.

With the net profit he wants to support the victims of the Russian war in Ukraine.

After Russia's attack on neighboring Ukraine, club owner Abramovich also came into focus.

He was considered one of numerous oligarchs and companies facing sanctions in Great Britain.

Abramowitsch then initially announced that he wanted to hand over the management of the association to trustees.

The German team manager Thomas Tuchel and the internationals Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Antonio Rüdiger are under contract at Chelsea.
