Sergiy Stakhovsky joins the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

At 36, the former professional tennis player is added to the list of high-level Ukrainian athletes or ex-athletes mobilized to fight against the Russian invasion.

“I know how to use a gun.

If I have to, I will, Stakhovsky said.

But I rather hope not to have to use a firearm, ”he explained to the Radio 4 station which belongs to the BBC group.

“My children do not understand war”

Notably known for having beaten Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013, in the second round, Stakhovsky retired after the last Australian Open in January and returned to Kiev to participate in the defense of his country like many other sports personalities.

He had to leave his wife and children behind in Hungary for this.

"I'm not sure how I got there," he admitted, "I know it's very hard for my wife.

My children don't know I'm here.

They don't understand war.

They are too small to understand what is happening,” he said.
