Russian businessman Roman Abramovich decided today, Wednesday, to sell English club Chelsea, and pledged to donate funds to help victims of the war in Ukraine.

"I have always taken decisions in the interest of the club," Abramovich said in a statement. "In the current situation, I have made the decision to sell the club, as I believe this is in the best interests of the club, the fans and the staff as well as the club's sponsors and partners."

The 55-year-old billionaire indicated that "the sale of the club will not be accelerated, but will follow due legal procedures," and explained that he would not ask for the money he provided to the club in the form of loans. Pure passion for the game and the club."

"I have instructed my team to establish a charitable foundation in which all proceeds from the net sale will be donated. This foundation will be dedicated to the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine. This includes providing the necessary funds to meet the immediate and immediate needs of the victims, as well as supporting long-term recovery work."

Abramovich considered that the option to sell "was a very difficult decision, and it pains me to be separated from the club in this way. However, I think it is in the interest of the club."

"I hope to be able to visit Stamford Bridge for the last time and say goodbye to all of you in person. It has been a privilege to be part of Chelsea FC and I am proud of all our joint accomplishments. Chelsea FC and its supporters will always be in my heart."

The decision to sell came after pressure mounted on Abramovich since the outbreak of the Russian war on Ukraine, and some politicians called for sanctions against the Russian billionaire because of his closeness to President Vladimir Putin.

Abramovich bought the West London club in 2003, and the investments made by the London team - Chelsea - helped it achieve the most successful period in its history, winning 5 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cup titles and the Champions League twice.
