With more than 50,000 runners expected, the New York City Marathon will return to full capacity on November 6, the New York Road Runners announced on Thursday.

Last year only 33,000 participants were authorized, due to the Covid.

The annual 42.195 km race counted up to 53,627 finishers in 2019. But since then, the 2020 edition has been canceled due to the pandemic.

The 50th edition of the New York marathon therefore took place a year later, in November 2021, with a gauge limited to 33,000 runners.

Only 25,010 runners had finally covered the distance.

"Last year's marathon was an uplifting and unifying moment for New York City's recovery, as well as a symbol of renewed hope, inspiration and perseverance," said the race director. , Ted Metellus.

“Next November, we will be delighted to welcome runners from all over the world again to provide one of the most beautiful days in New York,” he added.

“This race is the strongest proof of New York's relentless spirit and determination and we are proud to announce that this year we will be back at full capacity,” said the Mayor of New York, Eric Adams.

And to add: “With 50,000 runners competing in November, the city that never sleeps will also be the place where champions are forged.

In 2021, the New York Marathon was won by Kenyan Albert Korir in 2h 8min 22sec for men, and by his compatriot Peres Jepchirchir for women in 2h 22min 39sec.
