Manchester United announces the withdrawal of a sponsorship contract with a Russian company

The English Premier League club, Manchester United, said today that it withdrew from its sponsorship contract with Russian Airlines (Aeroflot) after Russian forces invaded the territory of neighboring Ukraine.

"In light of the current events in Ukraine, we have decided to withdraw from the sponsorship agreement with Aeroflot. We understand the concerns of our fans around the world and extend our support and sympathy to those affected by the events," a club spokesman said.

After the invasion, Britain prevented Aeroflot from landing in its airports after the company's license to operate in Britain was withdrawn.

United had signed a sponsorship contract with Russian Airlines in 2013 after the end of the partnership with Turkish Airlines.

Many sports bodies and institutions criticized Russia for its invasion of neighboring Ukraine, and the European Football Association (UEFA) decided earlier today to deprive the Russian city of Saint Petersburg of hosting the final match of the European Champions League on May 28 and decided to move the match to Paris, while Formula One canceled the Grand Prix race. Greater Russia due in September.
