Tennis Olympic champion Alexander Zverev was disqualified after freaking out at the tournament in Acapulco, Mexico.

The 24-year-old from Hamburg is no longer allowed to compete against Peter Gojowczyk (Munich) in his individual round of 16, this was announced by the ATP.

Gojowczyk advanced to the quarterfinals without a fight.

Zverev had lost his composure after his double defeat and vented his anger on the referee's chair.

After the 1: 2 (2: 6, 6: 4, 6:10) alongside Marcelo Melo (Brazil) against Lloyd Glasspool/Harri Heliövaara (Great Britain/Finland), the 24-year-old gave free rein to his frustration.

Zverev shouted loudly at the referee after the first round match and insulted him as a "damn idiot".

He repeatedly hit his chair with his bat.

In individual terms, Zverev had actually reached the round of 16.

The German number one moved into the next round after a record night shift on Tuesday shortly before 5 a.m. local time against the American Jenson Brooksby with 3: 6, 7: 6 (12:10).

No tour level match had ended this late before.
