A teenager from India has defeated world chess champion Magnus Carlsen in an online tournament.

16-year-old Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa won Monday night's Airthings Masters rapid chess tournament against the 31-year-old Norwegian.

Praggnanandhaa had previously attracted attention for his prowess in chess, but the win over Carlsen was his biggest to date, Indian media wrote.

At the age of 16, he was the youngest player to defeat Carlsen since 2013, when he became world chess champion for the first time.

In the duel with Praggnanandhaa, Carlsen gave up after 39 moves.
