Sometimes desolate, sometimes splendid - Borussia Dortmund remains a team with mysterious form fluctuations.

Only three days after the embarrassing appearance in the first leg of the Europa League against Glasgow Rangers (2: 4) they managed a 6: 0 (2: 0) thrashing of Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Nevertheless, Marco Rose didn't really feel a sense of liberation: "I believe that the disappointment hasn't gone away with this game, but continues to reverberate.

We all notice that," said the Dortmund soccer coach.

"We've dealt blows in the neck in too many games."

After a shaky start with a few brilliant acts by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, BVB played well against Gladbach, at least in the final phase.

Goals from Marco Reus (26th/81st minute), Donyell Malen (32nd), Marius Wolf (70th), Youssoufa Moukoko (74th) and Emre Can with a penalty kick (90th + 1) paved the way to their fifth victory in the sixth game of the second half.

BVB had only had such a good start to the second half of the season three times in the Bundesliga.

"We wanted and we had to show a reaction, we did it.

Today we regained our self-confidence,” commented the outstanding BVB captain Marco Reus.

"It just doesn't work that way"

Even the early injuries to Giovanni Reyna and Dan-Axel Zagadou didn't throw BVB off course.

At the latest after the 3-0 win by Wolf, all mental shackles from the game against the Scots were thrown off.

"The game was fun for the fans again," judged Julian Brandt and rated the clear 6-0 as encouragement for the second duel on Thursday with the Scots.

Nevertheless, like his coach, the midfielder referred to the changeable course of the season so far: "None of us want this rollercoaster ride.

We have games where we all really put our heads together.”

Reyna is now threatened with a longer forced break again.

"You have to assume that something has broken open again in its old place," said Rose.

US international Reyna was back in the starting XI for the first time since August 2021 after months of muscular problems, but had to be substituted in the 30th minute.

"Gio was done.

He's just coming off a long-term injury.

Of course that's very bitter," Rose complained.

A medical examination on Monday should reveal how serious the injury is.

In addition to Reyna, BVB will probably have to do without Zagadou in the second leg of the Europa League on Thursday at Glasgow Rangers.

Like Reyna against Gladbach, the defender picked up an injury and left the field in the 42nd minute.

"His thigh closed.

It has to be examined how damaged the structure is," said Rose.

The people of Gladbach also felt how close joy and sorrow sometimes lie together.

After two previously encouraging performances in Bielefeld (1:1) and against Augsburg (3:2), the team had to accept a 0:6 loss against Freiburg, as they did on matchday 14.

"Up to 0:3 it wasn't that bad.

But then you have a bit of the feeling that everything is against you today.

However, it must not happen that we give up like that,” complained midfielder Christoph Kramer.

Coach Adi Hütter saw it the same way: "As hard as it sounds with this result, I think it was an even game up to the 70th minute.

After the 0:3 we fell apart, that's just not possible.

Of course, such a clear defeat is now a setback.”
