In 1980, Ulf Lyfors became the first full-time national team captain for the women's national team.

During his seven years there, the historic European Championship gold in 1984 stands out.

Sweden became European champions in a final against England over two matches where everything was decided in a penalty shootout in the second match in Luton.

Anette Börjesson, one of the stars then, remembers an inspiring football coach who later also became a good friend.

- Very very boring to hear.

He was an incredible source of inspiration throughout and a wonderful person on the side.

Lyfors got us together as a team in a very good way, she says to TT.

Later, the national team captain's career continued for Ulf Lyfors when he led the Swedish boys' and junior national teams until 2001.

"Countless players, at all levels, have unforgettable memories of 'Uffe' and colleagues at the Swedish Football Association have lost a longtime friend whose humor and warmth added color to the working day," the association writes on its website.

Lyfors was married to Marika Domanski Lyfors, former national team captain and now national team manager for the women's national team.

She has now returned home from Blågult's collection during the Algarve Cup in Portugal.
