The iconic building housed irreplaceable memorabilia from the nine major competitions as well as the Ryder Cup hosted by Oakland Hills.

The club's chairman Rick Palmer thanks the rescue service, which has been able to save some of the treasures.

No people were reported injured in the fire.

How it started is not yet clear.

The 10,000-square-foot clubhouse was one of the largest wooden buildings in all of Michigan, according to the rescue service.

- Time will tell what happens next, but we will move forward with the aim of honoring all those who through golf and their work gave this magnificent building life, says Rick Palmer.

The Oakland Hills Golf Club opened in 1916 and has hosted the US Open six times, only two other golf courses have hosted the major competition several times.

In 2004, the Europa Ryder Cup won on its greens and in 2018, Padraig Harrington won the PGA Championship there.
