With a dramatic final comeback,

the Los Angeles Rams

beat

the

Cincinnati Bengals

23-20

on Sunday at their brand new SoFi Stadium and won the second Super Bowl title in their history.

A touchdown by star receiver

Cooper Kupp

with a minute and 35 seconds remaining gave the Rams their first championship since 1999 when they were based in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Rams thus succeed Tom Brady's Tampa Bay Buccaneers

in the record of the American Football League (NFL) ,

with whom they form an exclusive club of franchises that have lifted the Super Bowl title in their own stadium.

"I'm so proud of this team. We have so many great players, our defense responded in a big way," said quarterback

Matthew Stafford,

who found glory in Los Angeles after 12 frustrating seasons with the Detroit Lions.

The Stafford-Kupp connection, which has wreaked havoc in the NFL this year, ended up thwarting the extraordinary revival of the Bengals, who two years ago were the worst team in the league.

The young

Joe Burrow,

considered one of the heirs of the retired Tom Brady in the NFL, ended the game physically decimated and receiving a sack on the last play.

For the Rams, who returned to Los Angeles in 2016, this victory is

a rematch of the loss in the 2019 Super Bowl,

when they could only score 3 points (13-3) against Brady's Patriots.

In turn,

Sean McVay

became the youngest coach to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy, at 36 years and 20 days.

McVay, who won the duel against his former assistant and current Bengals coach,

Zac Taylor,

knew how to lead a squad designed to win this Super Bowl in his stadium to victory.

Cooper Kupp, decisive

In the game's opener, the Rams were the first to hit with an early touchdown pass from wide receiver

Odell Beckham Jr.

on a 17-yard pass from Stafford.

The 'quarterback', who was playing his first Super Bowl at the age of 34, found connections with his star receivers

Beckham Jr.

and Kupp, while Burrow only appeared in the first quarter with a deep 46-yard pass to his partner

Ja'Marr Chase ,

which drove in a Bengals field goal.

Cooper Kupp, the best receiver of the year and third most voted player for MVP, began to leave his stamp on the game with a touchdown that advanced the Rams 13-3.

Cincinnati didn't let the Rams get away and pulled within 13-10 before halftime with a brilliant play of strategy.

Six yards from the end zone, running back

Joe Mixon

gave up the run for a touchdown pass to

Tee Higgins.

It had been 42 years since a running back had thrown an aerial touchdown pass in a Super Bowl.

The score came in another blow for the Rams as they lost their biggest threat on the wings, Beckham Jr., retired before halftime with a knee injury.

The Rams went to the locker room with a slight advantage but in front of them they had a rival who had become the great 'giant killer' of these playoffs, capable of overcoming

Patrick Mahomes' powerful Kansas City Chiefs 21-3.

And it took Cincinnati just 12 seconds to get ahead on Burrow's spectacular 75-yard touchdown pass to Tee Higgins.

The final put

the Bengals even more in the face

with an interception by Stafford and another field goal by rookie Evan McPherson that put them ahead 20-13.

The Rams' defensive wall gritted its teeth in its siege against Burrow, who took a hard hit to his left knee when he was sacked for the seventh time.

On the other side, Stafford was also physically challenged but managed to pull the Rams within 20-16 and within

a yard of the end zone,

where he assisted Cooper Kupp for the decisive touchdown.

With SoFi Stadium turned into a pressure cooker, the Bengals' last advance was cut short by a spectacular sack of

Aaron Donald's Burrow,

who celebrated by pointing a finger to claim his coveted championship ring.

Among the 70,000 spectators at the final were movie stars such as

Sean Penn and Charlize Theron;

from music, like

Jennifer Lopez and Jay-Z

; and from sports, like

LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal,

who witnessed the first Super Bowl to be held in Los Angeles in nearly 30 years.

The long-awaited musical halftime show was a tribute to hip hop culture with icons like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Eminem.
