SC Freiburg fought a draw against FSV Mainz 05 thanks to top joker Nils Petersen.

The striker scored the goal to make it 1-1 (0-1) for his team from Breisgau shortly after coming on as a substitute.

For a long time, Baden had been inferior to Mainz, who had been weak away from home for weeks, but then Petersen came and dusted Vincenzo Grifo's corner with his foot (69th minute).

Alexander Hack (31st) had given the guests the lead in front of 10,000 spectators allowed according to the Corona rules.

The Breisgauer rewarded themselves with the equalization for the clear increase in performance in the second half and prevented a worse damper for their European Cup ambitions.

Without the hoped-for victory, coach Christian Streich will now travel to Berlin for the election of the Federal President.

Like national coach Hansi Flick, the 56-year-old has the honor of voting in Berlin on Sunday before preparations for the next away game at FC Augsburg begin in the coming weeks.

The Mainz coach Bo Svensson had demanded compensation for the five away defeats in a row - and could be satisfied in the first half.

However, the coach initially tore his hair out when Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken thwarted the best chance to date against Jonathan Burkardt (14th), who rushed towards him.

The keeper was immediately challenged again with Anton Stach's free kick.

The Rheinhessen were the superior and more dangerous team and confirmed why their defense is one of those that concede the fewest goals in the league.

The sports club initially found no way on the offensive.

Goalkeeper Robin Zentner was unemployed for a long time in his 100th Bundesliga game in the first half.

Consequently, Mainz deservedly took the lead, but had to wait for video evidence before it made it 1-0: Flekken saved a header from close range, then defender Hack successfully followed up.

The agile Burkardt missed the big chance to make it 2-0 when he missed the shot from the turn (41st).

On the other side, Freiburg intensified their attacking efforts after falling behind, Grifo tried twice unsuccessfully with a free kick (34th/39th).

Freiburg came out of the dressing room with more speed – and were snappier: Roland Sallai, however, failed at Zentner (52nd).

In return, Burkardt hit the side netting again.

The sports club tried to equalize and came to better conclusions than in the first half.

Lucas Höler headed just over after a corner kick (61').

In the 67th minute Streich then sent three fresh players onto the pitch in Petersen, Kevin Schade and Janik Haberer.

The spectators chanted "Here we go" - and Petersen immediately caused cheers.

The striker scored the 31st wildcard goal of his Bundesliga career, extending his Bundesliga record.
