Iranian skater suspended at Beijing Olympics for doping

Iranian alpine skier Hossein Savah Shamsky has been suspended from participating in the Beijing Winter Olympics after he tested positive for banned doping, according to the International Testing Agency (ITA), in the first reported case in the current games.

The agency stated that the 36-year-old athlete, who had not previously participated in the World Cup competitions, and finished 31st in the slalom at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, had a positive result in an out-of-competition test on the 7th of this month in Beijing.

The watchdog added, "The athlete was informed of the case and was temporarily suspended until a solution is found in line with the international anti-doping rules and the rules approved by the International Olympic Committee for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics."

"This means that the athlete is prohibited from competing, exercising, training or participating in any activity during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics," he added.

The Iranian can appeal the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport and resort to the analysis of the "B" sample.

Shamski is the second Iranian to test positive for doping at the Olympics after weightlifter Mohammad Reza Nashi at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
