The men's Olympic hockey tournament went on a tough run when it was decided at short notice that the NHL pros will not play in Beijing.

It also meant that the Russian team, which won in Pyeongchang four years ago, can carry the favorite to another gold.

On Wednesday, the Russian team played the opening match against Switzerland, but there was no gold class on the effort.

It was still a victory thanks to Anton Slepysjev's 1-0 goal with only three seconds left of the first period.

The goal was of the more random kind.

When time began to run out, Slepyshev desperately threw the puck in front of goal, where the Swiss Enzo Corvi with his leg steered the puck into his own box.

Later today, the Czech Republic-Denmark meeting awaits in the same group.

Twelve teams, divided into three groups, are in the men's hockey tournament in Beijing.

After the group stage, everyone goes on to either the quarterfinals or round of 16.

Tre Kronor plays its first match against Latvia, at 05.10 on Thursday morning, Swedish time.

The group also includes Finland and Slovakia.
