American Lindsey Jacobellis is the world's most dominant athlete in the short history of snowboard cross.

But the journey has not always been straightforward and a fatal mistake in Turin in 2006 may well have finally been dispelled.

Snowboardcross made its Olympic debut in Turin in 2006 and the final was about Jacobellis, who committed what can still stand as history's most famous Olympic mistake.

The ladies' final in Turin looked to be over after just a few seconds.

Lindsey Jacobellis had taken gold in the branch of the X-games three years in a row and took the lead immediately.

She would only go to the finish line - when she chose to grab the board in the penultimate jump.

A simple trick, where Jacobellis lost control, fell and lost the gold.

During the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and Sochi 2014, she missed the final.

But now, 16 years later, the American gets a long-awaited revenge - an Olympic gold.

The Beijing Games were Jacobelli's fifth attempt to take home an Olympic gold medal.

And this time the curse was broken when Jacobellis crossed the finish line before the Frenchwoman Chloe Trespeuch.

Jacobellis is now a two-time Olympic medalist.
