Anders Byström is not envious of the corona crisis in the Norwegian cross-country team. He knows all too well that it could just as easily have - and still can - affect Sweden. - It is a constant concern, says the Swedish national team manager.

At the last minute, the Swedish cross-country national team changed Italian location for its Olympic publisher, from Seiser Alm to Livigno.

It seems to have been a wise decision, given that covid-19 has now entered the Norwegian longitude squad, which is loading in Seiser Alm.

- We would not have stayed in the same hotel, but we were told by the hotel we would stay in that they had infection among their staff, and then it felt natural to move from there, says Sweden's national team manager Anders Byström.

- We could have been there.

Nervous wait

At the same time, he emphasizes that it seems to be more luck than skill that determines who suffers from the omicron variant.

Now it was the Norwegian Olympic skiers Heidi Weng and Anne Kjersti Kalvå who tested positive, next time the infection may have taken its toll on the Swedish team.

- It is a constant concern.

When we got our PCR tests yesterday and everyone was negative, then you are very happy that it went well.

But it is a pity that it has to be so, that you sit and wait for a test answer and that it should decide whether you can go to the Olympics or not.

Everyone is healthy, but still you are unsure of how the test will go, says Byström.

Han har lätt att föreställa sig hur den norska ledningen mår, för det är ett händelseförlopp han själv förberett sig på. Och när Norge kallade till presskonferens på onsdagsmorgonen, efter att sprinttränaren Arild Monsen testats positivt tidigare i veckan, anade Byström vad beskedet skulle bli.

Johansson nästan OS-klar

– Det verkar så otroligt smittsamt det här viruset. Och har man väl fått in det så är risken stor. Så när jag hörde att det skulle bli presskonferens så tänkte jag att det nog dessvärre var någon åkare som hade drabbats, säger Byström.

– Så det var väl väntat, men det är hemskt ändå. Man har tänkt de scenarierna själv, att vi skulle kunna hamna där också. Den där ovissheten för de andra är hemsk också – hur gör man nu med boende, resor och allt det där? Det blir ju kaos. Jag avundas verkligen inte det.

Tidigt under torsdagen åker det svenska längdlandslaget med buss från Livigno till Verona, där ett chartrat plan ska ta dem till Oslo för flighten över till Peking. Som det ser ut nu är truppen fulltalig. Även Leo Johansson, som testades positivt på hemmaplan förra veckan, väntas kunna ansluta.

– Han tar det sista testet i dag (onsdag), så vi ska inte ropa hej än. Men hittills har det sett bra ut, säger Byström.

Orolig för resan

Resan från Italien till Kina är det största riskmomentet, tror landslagschefen.

– Det är ett nålsöga att ta sig dit. Där borta är det nog väldigt säkert, men just att faktiskt få alla negativa tester och ta sig dit – det är nyckeln.

The Olympics will be inaugurated on February 4, and the cross-country competitions will begin with the ladies' skiathlon the next day.

Anders Byström is well aware that the closer the games get, the greater the consequences of a positive corona test.

- Then it will be a huge process in that case, with test regime and counting days.

But if you are not sick or have symptoms, then there is still the chance to be able to compete at the end of the championship.

But there is nothing you want to happen.
