[Beijing Winter Olympics] "Winter Olympics carbon measurement" black technology: real-time "brain" accounts for carbon dioxide emissions

[Explanation] Realizing the green Olympics is the commitment of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. To this end, China has taken multiple measures to minimize carbon emissions in the process of venue construction and event holding.

How effective are these measures?

How to carry out carbon control?

[Explanation] Entering the National Speed Skating Stadium from Ximen, people can see a large screen. Here is a platform called "Winter Olympics Carbon Measurement". It is like the "brain" of the venue's carbon emissions, which summarizes and displays the energy consumption and Carbon emissions-related data, and based on the level of activities related to venue operations, predict the new carbon emissions of venues during the Winter Olympics.

This project was led by Professor Wei Yiming of Beijing Institute of Technology, and jointly tackled key problems with 8 units such as the National Speed Skating Hall and Tsinghua University.

The main goal of our project is to use scientific monitoring technology and calculation methods to quantify how much carbon dioxide emissions we will generate by holding this Winter Olympics. account.

[Explanation] "Carbon" cannot be seen or touched. How to quantify this account?

On the "Winter Olympics Carbon Measurement" platform, the reporter found that green Samsung buildings reduced emissions by 68,000 tons, and new energy vehicles reduced emissions by 3,883 tons.

Yu Biying introduced that the production of carbon dioxide is related to venue construction, people, and energy consumption. The team can calculate the carbon dioxide emissions through the collection of relevant data.

To give the simplest example, all the venues hosting the Olympic Games this time use 100% green electricity. Green electricity actually uses renewable energy to provide electricity. The electricity is clean, and electricity basically does not produce carbon emissions. Compared with the electricity we use now, using 1 kWh of electricity can save nearly 600 to 700 grams of carbon dioxide, so if all venues use green electricity, then according to the calculation of our "Winter Olympics Carbon Measurement" platform, it is probably possible. Save 320,000 tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by nearly 32 million trees in an average year.

[Explanation] Yu Biying introduced that the Beijing Winter Olympics implemented more than 30 advanced low-carbon technologies and measures. After assessment, the total carbon reduction amounted to about 950,000 tons.

The "Winter Olympics Carbon Measurement" platform will scientifically quantify the effect of emission reduction and propose a carbon neutral control plan.

Then on the "Winter Olympics Carbon Measurement" platform, we will give information on how we should practice the remaining carbon emissions through, for example, forest carbon sinks, corporate donations, and low-carbon transportation and carbon-inclusive actions for our people. A neutralization.

[Explanation] In addition, the team also built a "zero-carbon cabin". The construction of the cabin is made of environmentally friendly materials and can be recycled. Its power system also relies on wind turbines and solar photovoltaic power generation to achieve "zero carbon emissions".

Our hut is currently located on the west side of the speed skating hall, and is used for ticketing and information consultation services during the event.

At the same time, we are also equipped with energy storage devices. During the day, the hut uses wind and solar power generation, and at night, we can use the electricity in our energy storage batteries, which ensures that the hut is 100% self-sufficient in electricity and achieves zero carbon emissions. a goal.

[Commentary] Yu Biying said that these will demonstrate to the outside world China's efforts to implement its carbon neutral commitment and achieve the goal of hosting the Olympics in a green way during the Winter Olympics.
