Tour de France champion suffers a terrible accident (photos)

Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal, winner of the 2019 Tour de France and holder of the Tour Italia, suffered an accident while training in his country on Monday, his team Ineos announced.

A team statement said Bernal, 25, was taken to hospital, where he was "under observation" and "vigil".

The accident occurred in the town of Gachanciba, about 30 kilometers north of the capital, Bogota.

In photos published by local media, the cyclist can be seen lying on the ground in a bus, surrounded by his teammates.

Police said Bernal "suffers from multiple injuries" and is currently in a clinic near Bogota.

According to authorities, Bernal hit the back of the bus when it stopped.

The Colombian press quoted his relatives as saying that the cyclist had a broken knee and femur and would undergo surgery.
