The World Mixed Martial Arts Championship kicks off today, under the umbrella of the International Federation of the Game, and sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, in cooperation with the Emirates Jiu-Jitsu Federation and Palms Sports Company.

The event will be attended by 521 male and female fighters from 60 countries, at the Jujitsu Arena in Zayed Sports City, and will continue until the 29th of this month.

The tournament will witness the participation of the first UAE team in mixed martial arts, which was formed last December, after conducting several experiments with the participation of 50 male and female fighters. 15 were chosen to represent the team, and an internal preparatory camp was held for them.

In the end, the team will be officially represented in the tournament by four fighters, who are Juma Bashir Al-Badour (flyweight), Saeed Al Hosani (featherweight), Fahd Ahmed Al Zaabi (middleweight), Abdullah Waleed Al Shamsi (rooster weight).

Member of the Board of Directors of the Jiu-Jitsu Federation and Chairman of the Martial Arts Committee, Mohammed bin Dalmouk Al Dhaheri, said: "Abu Dhabi continues its leadership in organizing major international sporting events, and consolidating its distinguished position as a leading destination that attracts the elite of events, and the best athlete in the world competes in it."

He stressed that the championship comes within the great interest of the wise leadership and its continuous support and sponsorship of the sports development process. He also stressed their keenness to provide all factors of success to present an exceptional and impressive version, especially since it is the first time that the championship is held in the UAE.

In turn, the CEO of Palms Sports Company, Fouad Darwish, confirmed that all the arrangements for the launch of the event have been completed, and explained: "We are confident of the success that the tournament will achieve at all levels in light of this great participation, and the balance that Abu Dhabi has in organizing the mixed martial arts championships (UFC) and (UAE warriors).

• The team is represented in the tournament by 4 fighters: Jumaa Bashir (fly weight), Saeed Al Hosani (feather), Fahd Al Zaabi (medium), Abdullah Al Shamsi (rooster weight).
