In the Bundesliga only four points before the relegation zone and now also out of the cup: Borussia Mönchengladbach slides deeper and deeper into the crisis after the next embarrassment.

A very bitter season is imminent.

When they lost 3-0 in the round of 16 at second-division side Hannover 96, coach Adi Hütter's actually ambitious team squandered the great opportunity to achieve something, at least in the DFB Cup.

"The disappointment is very big on our part, as we have performed here," said Hütter after the game.

The Austrian made no secret of his anger on Wednesday evening.

"It's very annoying and I'm also very angry that we were eliminated here," said the 51-year-old.

In the second round Borussia beat Bayern furiously 5-0, defending champion Borussia Dortmund was also eliminated.

"This year there's a really big chance to win the cup - and then we'll play a game like that," said captain Lars Stindl, who was quite at a loss.

Is Hütter afraid of the job?

The public pressure on the team, but of course especially on Coach Hütter, is now increasing. Hütter knows that himself, who came from Eintracht Frankfurt for 7.5 million euros before the season. "Of course, given the situation we're in, that's definitely not satisfactory. You have to be very clear about that," he said. "Of course I will do my best to get the team back on the road to success." When asked if he was afraid of losing his job, Hütter answered with a resounding "no".

How he should bring back the success seems more questionable than ever after the weak and sometimes listless appearance of his team in Hanover.

Almost all top performers call up their potential only sporadically this season.

Goalkeeper Yann Sommer is the only one who consistently plays at a very high level.

The Gladbach season is also so inexplicable because the team from the Lower Rhine has already impressively shown what they can do.

In the Bundesliga, VfL defeated Bayern 2-1 less than two weeks ago.

There was also a win against Dortmund in the league.

On the other hand there is a 0:6 defeat against SC Freiburg or now the game in Hanover.

The league continues against Union Berlin on Saturday.

It is possible that national player Jonas Hofmann, who was injured last, will return to the team as a beacon of hope.

But he will hardly be able to fix it alone.

"We just have to set up the right eleven at the weekend, who accept the situation and clearly oppose it," said Hütter.
