Together with Henrik von Eckermann and Malin Baryard Johnsson, Peder Fredricson won a historic Olympic gold in jumping this summer.

For that, the national jumping team was awarded the prize for this year's team, the Bragdguldet and the Jerring Prize.

- To be able to finish with the Jerring Prize was very big, Fredricson told SVT Sport after the gala.

Fredricson, who also took individual Olympic silver, European Championship bronze and finished 2021 as world number one, was also nominated for male athlete of the year where pole vaulter Armand Duplantis took home the prize.

High goals

- I have many good memories from 2021. The highlight was the Olympic gold and to take the position as number one in the world rankings, says Fredricson.

The 49-year-old has a hard time putting his finger on why 2021 was so successful.

- Maybe that I set the goals high and changed some things that might have made me lose as well.

But now it made me better.

That's right, if you want to get better, you have to dare to try new things and sometimes it gets better and sometimes worse, he says.

"Gets a little older of course"

That he dared to make changes in his training and in his approach is, according to Fredricson, partly due to the corona pandemic.

- I got more time at home and was not on tour all the time.

In the middle of a performance phase, you are more careful about making changes, but now I had a development phase and tried new equipment, training techniques and riding the horses without shoes.

It is precisely these changes that seem to have made things better this year.

You are 49 years old, what is it that drives you?

- I want to continue to develop things.

I enjoy what I do.

I'm getting a little older of course and the question has been asked how long I should last.

But I feel good and think it's great fun, as long as I do it I will continue.
