With three easy wins, French tennis is off to a good start for the week in Melbourne.

Harmony Tan, 107th in the world, was the first French woman to qualify for the second round of the Australian Open on Monday.

The player, who is participating for the first time at the age of 24 in the Australian Major, clearly dominated Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva (42nd) 6-3, 6-3.

Gaël Monfils also easily qualified.

The 19th in the world indeed dispatched the Argentinian Federico Coria (64th) 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.

With this victory, Monfils forgets the tears that marked his impotence when he entered the running in the 2021 edition. Athletic, precise and solid, the Frenchman dominated Coria head and shoulders, who however had a medical alert.

After the loss of the second set, the Argentinian brought the doctor to the court who listened to his heart with a stethoscope before letting him resume play.

No match between Tan and Ferro

Benjamin Bonzi, 65th in the world, also had a dazzling start by beating the German Peter Gojowczyk (87th) 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in 1h34.

Aged 25, the Frenchman is taking part in the Australian Open for the first time.

On the other hand, the match Harmony Tan – Fiona Ferro will not take place in the second round. The 101st in the world fought but finally lost logically against the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (17th) 6-1, 7-6 (7/4). Overtaken in the first round, where she committed 14 unforced errors against 7 to her opponent, the 24-year-old Frenchwoman however completely rebalanced the debates in the second. She even managed the break to lead 5-4 and serve to equalize at one set everywhere. But the 27-year-old Ukrainian won the tie-break where she won.

The tournament also ends in the first round for Kristina Mladenovic.

The French, 88th in the world, was dominated by the Swiss Belinda Bencic (22nd) 6-4, 6-3 in 89 minutes.

She had however started strong by taking the entry into play of Bencic, but this one broke in stride.

Trailing 5-4, Mladenovic conceded the first set losing her white serve.

The players again exchanged face-offs at the start of the second set but Bencic broke away 4-1 and did not let her opponent come back.

It's a disappointment for the Frenchwoman who reached the third round last year.
