Ancelotti 'happy' with Real Madrid's counter-attack

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said his team represented the essence of the counter-attack, a technique he made clear he was "happy" with before facing Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup final in Riyadh on Sunday.

Real Madrid beat rivals Barcelona 3-2 after extra time in the semi-finals on Wednesday to advance to the final.

The Italian coach told a press conference, "Our counter-attack against Barcelona was not an attack based on long passes and quick rebounds, but started with three or four passes. It was organized, and with a very good job. There were six players in the Barcelona penalty area when we scored the third goal. It was amazing."

"Some are saying that we rely on counter-attacks? I'm happy to rely on such attacks."

Ancelotti said he could not have imagined that he would return for a second spell with Real Madrid when he left in 2015.

The 62-year-old led the Spanish team to their 10th Champions League title in 2014 and left the following year.

"I never thought I'd be back, but I'm here after seven years and I'm happy to enjoy this moment," he added.

After the victory over Barcelona, Ancelotti made it clear that his team was preparing "to play a completely different match against a completely different opponent."
