The legal proceedings against the German modern pentathlon rider Annika Schleu, accused of mistreating a horse at the Tokyo Olympics in August 2021, have been definitively abandoned by the German courts, her lawyers said Tuesday.

"Not an admission of guilt" according to his lawyers

This highly publicized incident precipitated the decision of the International Pentathlon Federation (UIPM) to remove horse riding from the discipline's program after the Paris-2024 Olympics. No replacement event has yet been chosen. The 31-year-old athlete has pledged to pay 500 euros to a general interest association in exchange for the case being closed by the Potsdam public prosecutor's office. Ms Schleu was being prosecuted for violating German animal welfare law.

This arrangement “does not constitute an admission of guilt on the part of Ms. Schleu, nor an acknowledgment of guilt by the courts,” underline her lawyers.

The affair had a great impact during the Tokyo Olympics last summer: furious at having drawn lots for a horse that refused obstacles, the rider had mistreated him with whips and spurs.

His trainer Kim Raisner had also hit the horse and had been excluded for it from the Olympics.
