Josh Cavallo, a football player at Adelaide United, came out in October 2021 as gay.

He was greeted by tributes and supportive messages from the football world.

Back in everyday life and games in the Australian top league A-League, however, there have not only been positive reactions.

In Saturday's match against Melbourne Victory, he received hatred from opposing fans.

"I will not pretend that I did not see and hear the homophobic swear words in yesterday's match," Cavallo wrote on Instagram.

He continues.

There are no words to describe how disappointed I was.

As a society, it shows that we will continue to face these problems in 2022. ”

Condemned by the club

The home team has distanced itself from the behavior and the league has announced that they are working with the clubs to identify the accused persons.

"We strongly condemn this behavior, which has no place in our club or in our sport.

The club is working with the league, the arena and Adelaide United to investigate the matter further ", Melbourne Victory writes in a statement.
