• Faced with the economic difficulties linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, Olympique de Marseille asked for a reduction on the rent of the Vélodrome stadium, owned by the city.

  • But Benoit Payan, the mayor of Marseille, "does not want the Marseillaises to take charge of OM's difficulties".

  • However, he left the door open for negotiation.

The rent of the Vélodrome stadium, this old sea serpent. Faced with the economic difficulties linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, in particular because of the closed doors inflicted all last season and the return of the gauges since the beginning of this year 2022, the 'Olympique de Marseille wants to renegotiate the rent for the stadium.

As Marsactu reveals, ticket office losses, among others, generated by health measures push the club to request a discount from the city of Marseille, owner of the stadium, on the annual rent estimated at five million euros.

"Find a middle way"

“The OM is like any tenant, except that it's not just any tenant. There is the law, there is a rule, and then the specificity of what Olympique de Marseille is. The OM is like all companies, like all clubs, like all players in this area, struck by the health situation. OM is in a complicated situation, and asks me, it's legitimate, a very substantial reduction in its rent, ”confirmed Benoit Payan (PS), the mayor of Marseille, questioned on this subject during his vows to the press this Friday.

But the councilor does not wish to rest these difficulties on the citizens, and he was quite clear on the subject.

“I do not want the Marseillaises and the Marseillais to take charge of OM's difficulties.

What I have to do on small structures, I don't want to do it the same way on larger structures.

Yet OM is a partner and a main player in this city, but the Marseillaises do not have to pay for Franck McCourt, ”he announced.

While leaving the door open for negotiation: "I want to find a middle and intelligent way with OM so that everyone takes a step."

Discussions are therefore far from over.
