Sweden has suffered six corona falls in connection with the training camp before the European Championships.

Three players and two leaders have been found to be infected with covid-19.

In addition, a player has been isolated since a close relative became infected.

Most recently on Wednesday, it was announced that midfielder Oscar Bergendahl and assistant national team captain Martin Boquist had left positive test results the day before.

That EHF is now easing the quarantine rules is a good news for Sweden's squad.

Negative test

That directive shortens the compulsory isolation to five days after infection.

However, a comeback in the tournament also requires two negative PCR tests, which must be taken at least one day apart.

The first test must not be taken until the fifth day after the infection is diagnosed.

One must also be symptom-free, and considered by doctors to be ready to participate in elite sports.

According to the previous rules, 14 days of isolation applied to those who are found infected before the European Championships, and ten days to those who leave a positive covid test during the championship.

The EHF writes in a statement that the new rule is based on the latest public health recommendations on quarantine after covid 19 infection.

Easier to replace

At the same time, the rules for replacing infected players are being relaxed.

Under "special circumstances", a player leaving the European Championships can also be replaced by someone who is not part of the pre-announced gross squad of 35 men.

At the World Cup in Egypt, several teams, among them the Czech Republic in Sweden's group, were forced to withdraw completely due to corona falls.

Instead, reserve nations were called in at short notice.

In Sweden's group, the new team was Northern Macedonia.

The new covid rules that the EHF decided on on Thursday apply immediately.

Sweden's squad will submit new PCR tests partly on Friday and partly on Monday.

The European Handball Championship starts on 13 January.
