According to the Australian press, an administrative error is at the origin of the imbroglio.

Novak Djokovic is stranded at Melbourne airport on Wednesday despite the much commented medical exemption obtained by the world No. 1 to participate in the Australian Open, from January 17 to 30.

The nine-time winner of the tournament would not have completed the correct form to apply for a visa and the visa he requested does not authorize a medical exemption.

The federal customs service contacted the government of the state of Victoria, of which Melbourne is the capital, when the Djokovic camp noticed its error, explains the daily newspaper

Update on # AusOpen2022…

The Federal Government has asked if we will support Novak Djokovic's visa application to enter Australia.

We will not be providing Novak Djokovic with individual visa application support to participate in the 2022 Australian Open Grand Slam.

But this request was rebutted, says Jaala Pulford, a minister of the state of Victoria.

“The federal government has asked us if we support Novak Djokovic's visa application to enter Australia.

We will not endorse this request, she explained on Twitter.

We have always been clear on two points: the study of visa applications is a prerogative of the federal government and medical exemptions a prerogative of physicians.

In the crosshairs of the Australian political class

Djokovic, silent on his vaccination status, was already in the crosshairs of the Australian political class since he announced Tuesday that he had obtained the famous exemption.

"We await his presentation and that he provides us with evidence to support" this waiver, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Wednesday at a press conference.

"If that evidence is insufficient, then he will not be treated any differently from anyone else, and he will return home on the first plane."

There will be no special rule for Novak Djokovic.

Not the least ”, insisted the Prime Minister.
