Karl Geiger finished fifth at the start of the 70th Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf.

The 28-year-old local hero jumped 131.5 and 131 meters in heavy rain on Wednesday.

Geiger kept his chances of becoming the first German overall winner on the tour since Sven Hannawald 20 years ago.

However, he did not achieve the very big success at the start.

The victory went to the Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi ahead of the Norwegian Halvor Egner Granerud and his compatriot Robert Johansson.

The second best German was Markus Eisenbichler in seventh place.

Stephan Leyhe in ninth place and Pius Paschke in 26th place also received World Cup points.

It was bitter for Severin Freund.

The 33-year-old was actually doing well in the competition with a jump of 124.5 meters, but was then disqualified after the first round because of a non-compliant suit.

Last year's tour winner Kamil Stoch from Poland, like Bavarian Constantin Schmid, also retired after a jump.
