A shark kills a surfer in California

A surfer athlete was killed in a great white shark attack off the coast of central California yesterday, according to US authorities.

The Morro Bay Police Department said in a statement on Twitter that the accident occurred on the beach of Morro Bay Park just before 11 am.

The statement added that the man did not respond to attempts to revive him after being taken out of the water, "as he was suffering from an apparent attack by a shark."

The surfer was declared dead at the scene, but his identity has not yet been established.

Police said yesterday evening that the San Luis Obispo County Coroner's Office and state park representatives are investigating the scene. ABC reported that the area's beaches will remain open, but the authorities have ordered citizens to stay away from the water during the next 24 hours. A shark attack in the area occurred in January 2019 and injured a surfer.
