Gabonese police arrested the former coach of the national under-17 team on Monday in Ntoum, about forty kilometers from the capital Libreville.

According to a judicial source, Patrick Assoumou Eyi "is currently in the hands of the police after the filing of a complaint for act of pedophilia".

On Friday, Sports Minister Franck Nguema declared that this man, well known in Gabonese football circles, "would have abused hundreds of young boys in the course of his duties".

Known by the sobriquet of “Capello”, Assoumou Eyi directed the U17s of his country until 2017. He was, since, technical director of the football league of the Estuary, the province of the capital Libreville. The technician "was placed in police custody for a period of 48 hours, renewable once for the same duration", specified the judicial source, evoking "criminal facts".

On Friday, Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba spoke of a "very serious and unacceptable" affair.

He had given instructions "to seize the Minister of Justice for the opening of a judicial investigation in the national football community for sexual abuse having been committed against children, boys and girls", but also "to expand the inquiry to all national sports federations "to" eradicate potential sexual predators ".

Suspended by the Federation

According to the head of its relations with the press, the Gabonese Football Federation (Fégafoot) on Friday suspended Assoumou Eyi from his functions on a provisional basis and seized the Ethics Commission of the National Football League to conduct an investigation.
