Close Una Navara, the last car made by Nissan in Barcelona
Failure The Chinese GWM withdraws its offer to reindustrialize Nissan Barcelona
Interview "If I were a Nissan worker, I would choose Punch's industrial project"
The fourteenth meeting of the Nissan reindustrialization table in Barcelona,
which seeks an alternative for when the manufacturer leaves the facilities on December 31, has had as a great novelty the Government's promise that jobs will be guaranteed.
Nissan manufactured its last vehicle in the Free Trade Zone yesterday.
"Whatever the projects that replace Nissan, the workforce will be covered.
The industrial and logistics projects that are candidates to succeed it guarantee a number of jobs higher than the current one," states a statement from the Ministry of Industry categorically.
It is the same message that
the Government Secretary General for Industry, Raül Blanco,
had launched this morning at a ceremony in Barcelona
.
The three Nissan facilities employed about 3,000 employees,
but the figure has been reduced to about 1,400 workers once the rest have taken advantage of the early retirement plans or the compensation
agreed with the company, which reached 60 days per year worked.
Reinforce the role of the hub
Today's meeting took place just days after the Chinese GWM withdrew its offer to stay with the Free Zone plant, the largest of the three.
It was the key project and his refusal occurred despite the improvement in the initial conditions
promised by the central and regional governments.
In this situation, the alternative that gains more strength
is to reinforce the role of the electromobility hub, led by the Catalan technology company QEV Technologies and which, in addition to the Sant Andreu de la Barca plant (42,000 square meters), would occupy a large part of the 500,000 square meters that will be left free in the Free Trade Zone.
This hub, which integrates a dozen companies, would manufacture different electric models, such as a small van and even a large vehicle. In a first phase, it could contribute between 700 and 800 new jobs, with the capacity to grow later.
In addition, the
electric motorcycle manufacturer Silence would be installed
in the center of
Montcada i Reixac (74,000 m2).
So the main question now is which project or projects will end up occupying those remaining 100,000 m2 of the Free Trade Zone.
Belgian Puch returns to the scene
From that list, the armored manufacturer Tess Defense,
which was going to
perform maintenance and testing at these facilities.
This project never received official approval, and
unions have criticized that it has not been thoroughly studied.
Meanwhile, they have been opposed to logistics offers, such as that of Australia's Goodman,
arguing that they do not contribute to recovering the auxiliary automotive sector, very affected by the departure of Nissan.
Furthermore, the Belgian company Punch has once again expressed its interest in entering the
reindustrialization
process
with the revision of its initial project, which was discarded in favor of GWM's.
In this sense, the members of the committee have asked the table to resume conversations with Punch to clarify its new proposal and
study whether it can be complementary to the hub led by QEV Technologies
as a solution for the Free Zone plant.
The Punch Group initially planned to invest 650 million in Barcelona
to manufacture some 46,144 vehicles in 2025 and 75,678 in 2030, a volume that, according to those responsible for the company, would allow maintaining the current workforce, as well as guaranteeing a large part of the supplier network.
New meeting on December 29
The commission, made up of public administrations, Nissan and the unions, will meet again on December 29,
two days before the date set by Nissan to leave Barcelona definitively, although yesterday it closed its industrial stage in Catalonia with the manufacture of the last vehicle.
