What and where?

The World Short Course Championships (25m) will be held for the first time ever in Abu Dhabi and will take place between 16 and 21 December.

The Swedish swimmers, led by Sarah Sjöström, come to the competition with great results behind them and make up for the planet's very best in the sport.

The Swedish star Sjöström has big ambitions.

- Hopefully fight for top places and come down to world record times, she says to SVT Sport.

In total, the championship, which has been moved forward one year, comprises 44 different events.

The expert's thoughts

- It will be fun with a big championship.

For the Swedish part, it looks very fun, says SVT Sports expert Lars Frölander and continues:

- It will be very interesting to see if Emelie Fast can take further steps.

She swam really well here during the European Championships recently.

If she can polish it, it can be fantastic.

If Sjöström has a chance to beat Alshammar's record?

- She definitely has the capacity, she has shown that this autumn.

She's been down and sniffing at times.

All the details need to sit and she can not afford to make a mistake.

There is definitely a chance.

Ulrika Sandmark finished her assignment after the Olympics and the Swedish team will come to the World Cup without the national team captain.

What can it mean?

- For the experienced swimmers, things are going pretty well, I think.

It is good to have a cohesion and atmosphere in the squad and then it is important to have a league captain who holds the team together and then can also set the direction for the future.

Swedish medal chances

- On Sarah Sjöström's short distances, she has medal chances and gold weathering of course.

Then I think of 50 free and 50 butterfly.

She focuses on the sprint distances and I think she wants to swim very, very fast.

If she does, she will be hard to beat, says Frölander.

- Louise Hansson has really been on her toes during the autumn and made good results.

She is well placed and is a great medal candidate.

- Sweden has a good team race on the women's side as well, so there can also be a medal.

HISTORY

Over the years, Swedish swimmers have won a total of 66 medals, of which 28 gold, 20 silver and 18 bronze.

Sweden finished second in the medal league in 2000 and in the edition thereafter.

The Short Course World Cup was decided in Gothenburg in 1997.

Sjöström won three gold medals (50 m freestyle, 100 m butterfly and 200 m freestyle) at the 2014 World Short Course Championships.
