FC Bayern will play against FC Salzburg in the last sixteen of the Champions League.

That was the result of the second draw on Monday afternoon.

When the lots were first drawn, there were several technical breakdowns, the European Football Union previously announced to UEFA.

Originally, the German champions Atlético Madrid had been drawn as opponents.

The first time there were two big mistakes by UEFA: The English record champions Manchester United, trained by Ralf Rangnick, were initially drawn from the Spanish club Villarreal. According to the regulations, this was not allowed at all, as the two clubs met in the group stage. Former Russian international Andrei Arshavin had to draw again and then lost Villarreal to United city rivals Manchester City.

But that's not all: When Atlético Madrid were next runners-up in the group, Manchester United were falsely excluded as possible opponents. Instead, Liverpool were in the pot, but they already played against Atlético in the group stage. Ultimately, the Spaniards received FC Bayern as an opponent. Rangnick and Man United were then drawn as opponents of the French top club Paris Saint-Germain.

UEFA cited a "technical problem with the software of an external service provider" as the reason for the error.

This software tells the officials at the draw which teams have to go into the lottery pots.

Michael Heselschwerdt, head of club competitions at UEFA, filled the lottery pots as the system told him to do.

But already after the lots had been drawn, the mistake was noticed in Nyon.

The drawing was repeated, but a regular process was no longer possible.

Therefore, the umbrella organization decided to do a complete repetition.
