It is the American Gymnastics Federation, the US Olympic Committee (Usoc) and the organizations' insurance companies that are liable to pay the damages.

According to the Wall Street Journal, this is one of the highest sums ever paid to victims of sexual assault.

In total, there are hundreds of vulnerable people over three decades.

One of the victims is gymnastics star Simone Biles, who took four Olympic golds and 19 World Cup golds.

Several other national team gymnasts, including Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Maggie Nichols, were also abused during Larry Nasser's tenure as national team doctor.

Both Usoc and the gymnastics association have been heavily criticized for their slow response to the accusations against Nassar.

Sentenced to 360 years in prison

At the end of 2016, the claims for damages began to fall against both organizations, which forced the gymnastics association to file for bankruptcy.

Now the long struggle for financial compensation has been resolved.

Nassar has previously been sentenced to a total of 360 years in prison for his crimes.

However, the FBI's investigation has also been criticized by the gymnasts concerned.

At a Senate hearing earlier this year, star Simona Biles said they "have been let down and deserve answers".

Among other things, the high schools' testimonies must have been distorted and left undocumented for a long time.
